something happens unexpectedly...
i nevr realize until he went to his hometown..
several months passed that donkey was all i want to be with ..
not thinking that i was inspired by someone that
i dont think to become an inspiration..
he is someone opposite to what donkey is..
he is also nice man..
he makes me laugh before i got sleep..

why to study future technology..
recalling the past have given people idea what and how
to improve and make that are know very useful to us.
such as studying the past technology could help us determine what was
the origin of each of the technology that are current trend.
in identifying the current technology would give us idea how
to improve it and make it more useful to us. so, it is
important to study future technology for its not only focused
on the future but also studies the past and the current one.
on the IT industry it was very useful for IT people are working for the
good and better technology. that would greatly help us in our day to day

[color=blue]Based on my experience during the enrollment period, the enrollment system of the university was very hassle. You may take 2-3 days or more to certify that you are officially enrolled. i can consider it as very costly, not of the fees but to the time being consumed in enrolling. students undergo different transactions, from getting the PRF from the adviser after asking their advisory for what subjects we can take based on the evaluation you have undergo based on the grades you get from last semester the sad part is that i have seen the forms of the enrollment system it was really different as compare with the PRF that we fill up. from the arrangement of information to the spaces and check boxes provided so its really heard for the encoder to input those information. student then fill up the PRF then directly go to the encoder to take a slot of the subject you will be taking, the crucial part is that in filling up the PRF you wouldn't able to know if the slots of that subject code was already taken by other students. It was hassle since you will be again exerting effort to find again another subject code. After encoding you will proceed to the cahier to pay for tuition, then go to the registrar's office to certify that you were officially enrolled. so it was really a long process to go before you can call yourself as a bonafide student of the university.
i suggest a new automated system for enrollment. i would suggest to automate from the advising, filling up PRF to automatically be added to the system that would not need the encoder to input all of those information written on the PRF.
a system having this flow:
- pay the local fees manually.
-since the university's official website has a feature that provides student an access to be able to see their grades of last semesters subjects, the advisers can might have an access to that feature that would directly evaluate the grades of the students of what subjects are they going to get this incoming semester.
-then, the evaluated grades will now reflected to the enrollment system forms that would automatically added the subjects to be taken. And the students now can choose on what the schedule she would adopt.
-after that, the forms will generate report that can be automatically reflected to the cashier, so the student now no need to fill up PRF and the encoder would not need to print those forms with the subject code, description, schedule and the tuition fees. The student can now go directly to the cashier to pay the fees and those subjects reflected to
The automated PRF will going to be reflected to the Registrar's database so after the student to pay the student can now called himself as a bonafide student without going to registrar's office to certify.
With that kind of enrollment system the students can be enrolled for at least half a day,
The university can just add personnel to work as cashiers and encoders. with these the long lines of the student in registrar will be vanished just the lines
in the cashier will remain but at least the hussle was lessen.

We interview Mr. Ariel Roy Reyes, but unfortunately we were not able to talk to him in person because he was so busy. Below are the following questions we have thrown to him and the answers.
Questions:
In system development, how various parts of the system communicate with each other throughout the university? In what way?
Regarding System Development, the best person to ask is our University Programmers, Mr. Fortich and Dr. Mercado.
What are the components involved in the system(s) in the university? (hardware, software, technology, etc.)
• I am not in the right position to discuss the details of the software components used as there are other assigned personnel for such job. However, talking about hardware component and technology used, basically I, assigned as the network administrator, is entrusted to maintain our different servers to run 24/7. Currently, we have our Web Server hosted here in our University in our HP ProLiant ML350 Server. Its an old but stable server set-up here in our Networks Office and has been active since Engr. Val A. Quimno , not yet a dean, was appointed as the Network Administrator. The said server has the following specification:
• Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz, 3.2 GHz, or 3.4 GHz processors (dual processor capability) with 1MB level 2 cache standard. Processors include support for Hyper-Threading and Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T)
• Intel® E7520 chipset
• 800-MHz Front Side Bus
• Integrated Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI Adapter
• Smart Array 641 Controller (standard in Array Models only)
• NC7761 PCI Gigabit NIC (embedded)
• Up to 1 GB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM with Advanced ECC capabilities (Expandable to 8 GB)

Aside from it, our mail server running under Compaq Proliant ML330 Server, our oldest server, is also hosted here in our Networks Office. Together with other Servers, such as Proxy and Enrollment Servers, both proxy and our enrollment servers are running in a microcomputer/personal computers but with higher specifications to act as servers.
How do these communicate with one another? (Topology, network connectivity, protocols, etc.) – may include data flow/ UML diagrams to better explain.
All Servers are connected in a shared medium grouped as one subnetwork. In general, our network follows the extended star topology which is connected to a DUAL WAN Router that serves as the load balancer between our two Internet Service Providers. All other workstations are grouped into different subnetworks as in star topology branching out from our servers subnetwork as in extended star topology. At present, we are making use of class C IP Address for private IP address assignments. Other workstations IP assignments are configured statically (example: laboratories) while others are Dynamic (example: offices). All workstations are connected via our proxy servers that do some basic filtering/firewall to control users access to the internet aside from router filtering/firewall management. So, whenever any workstation has to connect to the internet, it has to pass through software and hardware based firewall.
What are the processes involved in the communication (each system to other systems)?
As mentioned above, in item 3, all workstations are connected via a proxy server. It means that whenever a workstation is turned on, it requests for an IP address from the proxy server (for dynamically configured IP address) and connect to the network after IP address is acquired. As connection is established, each system can now communicate and share resources within the same subnetwork and to server following the concepts discuss in your Computer Network Class.
How do you go along with the maintenance of the system?
Basically, our servers are expected to be in good condition since it is required to be up 24/7. Daily, during my vacant period, monitoring on the servers are observed that includes checking logs, checking hardware performance such as CPU health, etc. If problems are observed, remedies are then and then applied. Once in a week, regular overall checkup is observed as preventive maintenance to ensure not to experience longer downtime if possible.
Does the system follow a specific standard? Explain Please.
As I was appointed as the Network Administrator, everything was already in place except for some minor changes. Basically, different networking standards was already observed such as cabling standards, TIA/EIA 568A-B, different IEEE standards as discussed in your Computer Networks Subject, etc.
How is the security of the system? Are there any vulnerabilities? Risks? Corresponding mitigation techniques? Access control?
As I have mentioned, we have implemented both software and hardware based filtering/firewall. Basically, Risks or vulnerabilities and different mitigation techniques were considered to increase security in our network. Aside from filtering/firewall, constant monitoring on networks activity also increases the security of the system.
Are there any interference? During what (most) times do these occur? Explain their effects especially with regards to the business of the university?
Major Interferences are normally encountered as an effect of unforeseen and beyond our control events such as black outs, and the like. The said interference would of course affect University’s day-to-day businesses for obviously this will paralyze all our activities that rely on electricity and further this might cause damage on our network devices, etc. that may later be the reason for longer downtime. Problems encountered by our providers such as connection to the National/International Gateway also affect University’s business such as correlating to University’s Business Partners outside and within the country.

[color=blue]PRF or Pre-Registration Form is the enrollment input form that is given by the adviser to the student that serves as an evaluation of the students’ current standing and units allowed to enroll. The enrollment form must be filled up with the necessary information needed as part of the enrollment process for the students’ information. Basically, the enrollment input form inquires only the students’ rudimentary attributes such as College, Name, ID Number, Address, Semester, School Year, Course, Class, Section, Sex, Type, Scholarship, Code, Course Title, Course Description, Units, Section, Time, and Room.
The SRIS will automatically show the subject, description, units, section, time and room, once the encoder inputs the subject code that a certain student would like to enroll in. The PRF is indeed a PRE REGISTRATION FORM. The encoder needs the information on the PRF, so that the enrollee will be registered. The PRF also helps the student be informed of his schedule, beforehand, to avoid conflicts. There are some information on the SRIS that I find quite useless, such as the Civil status and the Desired Career. Well, the last one that I mentioned, which is the 'Desired Career' really made me laugh, because there is already the Course field, so I think, that Desired Career stuff is quite useless. hehe
In general, the SRIS is quite fine, it has the necessary information needed and it has the CRUD (Create, Retrieve, Update, Delete) capability. I just hope that the information in the PRF will correctly be encoded in the SRIS. I can't ignore the fact that the encoder may forget to check if the address of that certain student have changed, or other personal details in the PRF. [/center][/color]

the university has exerting effort in automating the enrollment system or to make it more easier for the students to be enrolled.from the very first time i enrolled in this university, even in the Tagum Campus, i actually experienced same scenarios.get grades, undergo advising, go to the encoder, pay local fees, pay miscellaneous, and go to registrar to certify that you are officially enrolled. all of those steps were actually a very very long process and it takes a long number of hours just to be enrolled. according to my mother, it was the same process or steps she experience when she enrolled my brother on the USEP Tagum Campus, and as compare to what i experienced in enrolling myself, she said that it was a bit easier than before, for before when number of units were not that many, they actually writes their subjects to be enrolled and they do not have to go for the encoder, for the forms where they write the subjects to be enrolled is given to the registrar and be kept as their record for they do not a automate the system before. so according to her, though it was a manual procedure but compare to our enrollment system now, they have just smaller period of time spent than today's enrollment system.
as what Ive realized, if the old manual enrollment system able the enrollees to spent a lil bit small period of time than now, i think the university can make it easier and hassle free than before. i can say that the university must have a lil more review on the enrollment system, so that they would be able to have a plan of re organizing it to be more beneficial to the students and even to the staff and faculty.

Given the chance to evaluate the enrollment system of the University, it is a must that I should first identify all the things that will be involved during the evaluation period.
So let me define what application deployment environment all about is. The application deployment environment consists of the computer hardware (platforms) and operating systems that will support the application program. The new application system may have to meet special design requirements to conform to the restrictions of the operating system and the equipment.
When managers deploy information technology (IT) they frequently are forced to make decisions about two different, yet related sets of issues simultaneously. First, they identify the characteristics of the competitive or business environments in which the IT will be deployed. This enables them to select the most beneficial deployment environments, to maximize the potentials that the IT contributes business value to the firm. Second, recognizing that all deployment environments are not created equal, they also find it may be worthwhile to adjust the characteristics or features of the IT to take into account those differences.
Often it is difficult to separate the influences of the deployment environment (which may be beyond the control of management) and the features of the IT. Still, in order to successfully deploy IT to create competitive advantage or sustain competitive parity at an acceptable cost, managers need to be good at choosing deployment locations and the features of the ITS they invest in.
As an analyst important characteristic should be consider in order to define a rightful deployment environment. Analysts consider the configuration of computer equipment, operating systems, and networks that will exist when the new application system is deployed.
Analyst must always consider the configuration of computer equipment in order to maintain an understanding of the status of complex assets with a view to maintaining the highest level of serviceability for the lowest cost. Specifically, it aims to ensure that operations are not disrupted due to the asset overrunning limits of planned lifespan or below quality levels.
Computer hardware configuration management is the process of creating and maintaining an up-to-date record of all the components of the infrastructure, including related documentation. Its purpose is to show what makes up the infrastructure and illustrate the physical locations and links between each item, which are known as configuration items. Computer hardware configuration goes beyond the recording of computer hardware for the purpose of asset management, although it can be used to maintain asset information. The extra value provided is the rich source of support information that it provides to all interested parties.
Consider the operating systems; the OS is responsible for management and coordination of processes and allocation and sharing of hardware resources such as RAM and disk space, and acts as a host for computing applications running on the OS. The purpose of an operating system is to organize and control hardware and software so that the device it lives in behaves in a flexible but predictable way.
And the networks, the devices connected by communications channels that facilitates communications among users and allows users to share resources with other users where the new application be deployed must be deemed for deployment.
With all of these, let us also cite the differences between the application deployment and deployment environment. The development environment consists of the programming languages, CASE (computer-assisted software engineering) tools, and other software used to develop application software.
The application deployment environment, particularly the operating system, DBMS, and distributed software standard, usually limits the choices that are available for the development environment.
Companies prefer certain languages for system development, and their analysts are familiar with the features of these languages. As newer languages provide additional capabilities, however, companies may consider different languages for their system development. An analyst should consider both the application deployment and development environments when determining how they will work with a particular application.

In reference to our assignment 8 and 9, a System Analyst has three required skills to be considered. It includes the ability to work on the technical and business side and also the ability to handle people, which is the most important skill.
The systems analyst (sometimes called systems architect or systems designer) orchestrates the effort. He starts by interviewing users, teasing out what they need as opposed to what they want—the nice-to-have things usually cost more than necessary. He often uses modeling software to evaluate what-ifs.
System Analysts need good speaking and writing skills, too, so that they can explain their systems and give good instructions to their clients. They draw diagrams and charts to show how information will get into the computers, how that information will be processed, and how it will get to the people who need it.
As mentioned, System Analyst should have a broader knowledge on how to create a data flow diagram. He must analyze the process of the system first before doing the whole diagram. The system analyst is in-charge of describing the right processes and considered all necessary information about the system in order to come up with a more readable and internally consistent balanced data flow diagram. The detailed description of every symbol used in the diagram. He must know how the decision variables will be properly put on. And lastly, the system analyst should be the one responsible for when be the process of the system will end.
So let me describe how data flow diagrams really works.
Data flow diagrams is a modeling tool used to describe the transformation of inputs to outputs. It is graphic illustration that shows the flow of data and logic within the system. The model generally starts with a context diagram showing the system as a single process connected to external entities outside of the system boundary. This process explodes to a lower level DFD that divides the system into smaller parts and balances the flow of information between parent and child diagrams. Many diagram levels may be needed to express a complex system. Primitive processes, those that don't explode to a child diagram, are usually described in a connected textual specification.
Data flow diagrams provides an overview of what data flows in a system, what transformations are done on the data, what files are used and where results flow. It is a good documentation aid which is understood by both programmers and non-programmers (i.e., laypersons). As DFD specifies only what processes are performed and not how they are performed it is easily understood by a non programming
user.
What is a context diagram?
A diagram giving an entire system’s data flows and processing with a single Process (circle) is called a context diagram.
What do you understand by leveling of DFD?
A context diagram is expanded into a number of inter-related processes. Each process may be further expanded into a set of inter-connected sub processes. This procedure of expanding a DFD is known as leveling.
What is a physical DFD?
A physical DFD specifies from where data flows and who processes the data and to whom the processed data is sent.
In what way is physical DFD useful?
It is easy to develop during fact gathering stage of systems analysis. Such a physical DFD is easily understood by a lay user who can verify the DFD drawn by an analyst and tell whether such a DFD corresponds to a particular operation
taking place in an organization. Physical DFD is the starting point for developing the logical DFD.
Thus, with the given characteristic of a system analyst and defining the data flow diagrams, I could say that I still have to practice more in analyzing certain systems in order to create a more effective diagram. I still have to develop my ability to interpret diagrammatic presentations of work flow, and prepare computer block diagrams and flow charts. And also the ability to operate an on-line date entry terminal.

Juan: The way to go about the analysis is to first examine the old system, such as reviewing key documents and observing the workers perform their tasks. Then we can determine which aspects are working well and which should be preserved.
Pedro: We have been through these types of projects before and what always ends up happening is that we do not get the new system we are promised; we get a modified version of the old system.
Juan: Well, I can assure you that will not happen this time. We just want a thorough understanding of what is working well and what isn’t.
Pedro: I would feel much more comfortable if we first started with a list of our requirements. We should spend some time up-front determining exactly what we want the system to do for my department. Then you systems people can come in and determine what portions to salvage if you wish. Just don’t constrain us to the old system.

As to the conversation made by Peter Pedro which is the department manager and John Juan the system Professional, it was obviously a conflict between their ideas on what they were going to do first upon developing the system that would surely a great help to a less hassle and a not time consuming system. Since they have been working before in the same project, Peter Pedro was saying that they have been undergo with the same process of system development but they have ending up making a modified version of the existing system in short they have not been successful attaining their target. So he said to John Juan that they have to go with another tactics in developing a system, but John Juan insist that they have to undergo with the same process again. I think I would go for the idea of John Juan, since they have been working for that process and they know the outcome was not the same as their target, they can easily made their development a little bit different from before, with this case they can now identify in which part of activities they have done wrong that would result to the modified version of existing system.
But actually, legacy system is not easy to replace but if you would made a very good system it would be like making a system that as easy to use as the legacy one.
In making the development of the new system successful, the two must agree with what process model they would use. I would suggest that they use the Waterfall model, not only because it was traditional model but it was tested and proven that it has a big possibilities that would come up to a very good system. First, the manager and the system professional must undergo planning which may cater their own ideas, such as listing the requirements of what the manager wants and at the same time the system professional can now observe the functionality of the existing system and review the document, after such they can now discuss what are the functions that the new system have that is unique with the existing and what to preserve functions. With this the two can now decide of what really is the scope of their project.

Seed stage: this is the first stage of university’s life cycle in which, the USEP is just an idea or a thought. This is the very origin of establishing a University.
Start up Stage: the university was born and is exists legally. With accordance to the passed Batas Pambansa Bilang 12, this legally proclaimed the establishing of University of Southeastern Philippines. In this stage was focused on how you will build a name in having a standard form of education that run under the power of government.
Growth Stage: the University has made it through the toddler years, and the number of officially enrolled students is fortunately increasing. The focus in this stage is more on running the University in an easiest way to handle the increasing number of students who wants to enroll in the university.
Established Stage: it is where the university has built its name in the education industry. Its focus now is on improvement and how to be more productive in terms of their services. It involves the new setting of systems in all transaction in the University for its Better Services offered.
Expansion Stage: the life cycle was characterized by new period of growth; this may include the transformation of system of transaction from manual to automation. Its focus was on adopting high technologies to be part of their services. This stage was very crucial since they will be adopting new systems, the adopted changes might have good or bad effects in the university services. Good, means it has a positive response to the persons easily done their transaction because of new system, bad if the new system has hassled many people who undergo those transactions.
In the expansion stage, it does meet our needs since the university adopts new technology in terms of our enrollment system; they made it more efficient for us, because unlike before, the student who will be enrolling in the university had to write each subject for the registrar and the concern department. As what the presenters in the 2nd module presented, system analyst can be the person who is a problem solver, supporting expert, consultant and an agent for change.
In the third module, System analyst as what we presented can be a project manager.
First I would like to define what a project is, it was undertaken to produce an output for the benefits and advantage of the organization. Project is funded by the client in terms of resources and is worked in line with the timeframe agreed by both parties the client and developer. When doing a project it must have a management, when you say project management it was the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to achieve specific goals and objectives in doing the project.
Project manager is also the person who is responsible in managing the project in which uses his knowledge in the field of project management. In our report we have enumerated some internal and external responsibilities of a project manager. When we say internal, it is about the responsibilities of the manager in the project, and external means it was the responsibilities of the manager outside the project or commonly concerned with the resources, status of the project and etc.
In internal, project manager is responsible for identifying a project tasks and should build a work breakdown structure that is very useful for starting the project. Next, is to develop a project schedule.
Then, recruit and train your team members and assign them in the tasks that you have identified in the work breakdown structure that in line with your project schedule. Then, identify the possible risks that you may encounter during the development of the project and then assess it. Last is monitor and control the project deliverables and also verify its quality.
In external, project manager is responsible for reporting the status and the progress of each of the phase in developing the project, the manager is also responsible for establishing good working relationship with the clients and even with the team members. And another important responsibility is to identify the resource needs in developing project and must explain how to obtain those resources.
In Rhine Marketing, we have interviewed their IT personnel; Mr. Cris Abella only shared few of the hot points since it is almost similar to the qualities, attitudes and skills that systems analysts must be exercised.

The system analyst must be a problem solver, agent for change, a consultant and a supporting expert. as an analyst you must acquire technical, business and people skills and knowledge.
In my own notion, I can define system analyst as a person who has the ability to analyze the flow of the business process, and the technical and human resource aspect of an organization. I can tell that an analyst can be an agent for change because with his enough knowledge to the organization’s processes, he can give his opinion about issues that can merely affect the operations of the organization.
Analyst as a consultant when we say consultant it prefers to a professional who has a wide knowledge on a subject matter on a specific field.

Information technology changes rapidly as we all know. From time to time technology upgrades. We can’t even notice the fast changes of the technology nowadays. In response, many organizations create a formal group of IT professionals to evaluate emerging IT so they can better cope with its change. A survey based on structured interviews was mailed to a nationwide sample of 1,000 IT organizations. Two hundred forty-six respondents provided data to identify categories of coping mechanisms to handle changing IT. Information has emerged as an agent of integration and the enabler of new competitiveness for
today’s enterprise in the global marketplace. However, has the paradigm of strategic planning
changed sufficiently to support the new role of information systems and technology? We reviewed
the literature for commonly used or representative information planning methodologies and found
that a new approach is needed. There are six methodologies reviewed in this paper. They all tend to
regard planning as a separate stage which does not connect structurally and directly to the
information systems development. An integration of planning with development and management
through enterprise information resources - which capture and characterize the enterprise - will
shorten the response cycle and even allow for economic evaluation of information system
investment.
For a long time relationship between information system functions and corporate strategy
was not of much interest to Top Management of firms. Information Systems were thought to be
synonymous with corporate data processing and treated as some back-room operation in support of
day-to-day mundane tasks (Rockart, 1979). In the 80’s and 90’s, however, there has been a
growing realization of the need to make information systems of strategic importance to an
organization. Consequently, strategic information systems planning (SISP) is a critical issue. In
many industry surveys, improved SISP is often mentioned as the most serious challenge facing IS
managers (Pavri and Ang, 1995, Beath and Orlikowski, 1994; Martin, 1993; Porter and Miller,
1985).
Planning for information systems, as for any other system, begins with the identification of
needs. In order to be effective, development of any type of computer-based system should be a
response to need--whether at the transaction processing level or at the more complex information and
support systems levels. Such planning for information systems is much like strategic planning in
management. Objectives, priorities, and authorization for information systems projects need to be
formalized. The systems development plan should identify specific projects slated for the future,
priorities for each project and for resources, general procedures, and constraints for each application
area. The plan must be specific enough to enable understanding of each application and to know
where it stands in the order of development. Also the plan should be flexible so that priorities can be
adjusted if necessary. King (King, 1995) in his recent article has argued that a strategic capability
architecture - a flexible and continuously improving infrastructure of organizational capabilities - is
the primary basis for a company's sustainable competitive advantage. He has emphasized the need
for continuously updating and improving the strategic capabilities architecture.
SISP is the analysis of a corporation’s information and processes using business information
models together with the evaluation of risk, current needs and requirements. The result is an action
plan showing the desired course of events necessary to align information use and needs with the
strategic direction of the company (Battaglia, 1991). The same article emphasizes the need to note
that SISP is a management function and not a technical one. This is consistent with the earlier
distinction between the older data processing views and the modern strategic importance view of
Information Systems. SISP thus is used to identify the best targets for purchasing and installing
new management information systems and help an organization maximize the return on its
information technology investment. A portfolio of computer-based applications is identified that will
assist an organization in executing its business plans and realize its business goals. There is a
growing realization that the application of information technology (IT) to a firm’s strategic activities
has been one of the most common and effective ways to improve business performance.
Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people. Various business analysis techniques can be used in strategic planning, including SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats ), PEST analysis (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological), STEER analysis (Socio-cultural, Technological, Economic, Ecological, and Regulatory factors), and EPISTEL (Environment, Political, Informatic, Social, Technological, Economic and Legal).
Strategic planning is the formal consideration of an organization's future course. All strategic planning deals with at least one of three key questions:
1. "What do we do?"
2. "For whom do we do it?"
3. "How do we excel?"
In many organizations, this is viewed as a process for determining where an organization is going over the next year or more -typically 3 to 5 years, although some extend their vision to 20 years.
In order to determine where it is going, the organization needs to know exactly where it stands, then determine where it wants to go and how it will get there. The resulting document is called the "strategic plan."
It is also true that strategic planning may be a tool for effectively plotting the direction of a company; however, strategic planning itself cannot foretell exactly how the market will evolve and what issues will surface in the coming days in order to plan your organizational strategy. Google is obviously best known for search and for ads associated with search. This is in essence Google’s one true product. It is the one feature Google developed for the outside world. When Google developed search it was no different from a small company. It is what Google has done since then that makes Google different.
Google doesn’t answer to any external power. They don’t have anyone they have to deliver a product to. There is no contract with a deadline. Due to not having any external dependencies, Google can continuously iterate over a product until it reaches a state of near perfection. It can stay in internal testing as long as Google wants and no one is going to care. See Gmail, Google Maps, etc. This then allows Google to use the perfect form of the agile process. Continuous iterations and testing and development, continues improvement. Then as Google sees fit, release the products. As they get better and better, more people use them and more money from ads come in. It’s beautiful.
It’s also unlikely any other company is going to be able to pull this off. Google hit on the formula for ads before anyone else. They now have such a commanding lead in that arena that to compete with them you need deep pockets of money of your own. That makes it difficult to launch a company and follow Google’s lead of avoiding external dependencies and having the near perfect product development process.
At this point, you might be screaming at me that I’m wrong, because Google does have external contracts, especially for serving up ads on other sites. But notice that Google’s contracts are different from most companies’ contracts. Google isn’t developing a product for these companies. All they are doing is giving them an existing product that Google has already completed and released. Development on that product might still be happening, but it happens within Google, not within the realms of the contract. Google is still free to develop how ever they want.
For almost everyone else, you’re going to have to create a product and then drive sales of that product or else sign a contract and then deliver a custom product to the customer. You’ll have external dependencies that will force an outside reality upon you that Google simply doesn’t have. You can argue that Google is dependent upon ads, but at this point Google has captured such a large share of that market and is steadily capturing more of it, that it really isn’t a dependency for Google. Sure, Google should probably diversify, just in case the ad market tanks, but at this point Google has so much money they can afford to take their time.
So now you see. It’s unlikely you or anyone else is going to emulate Google. Kiss that dream goodbye.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from Google. Copy the good things that Google does and adapt them to your business. What you shouldn’t do is force the practices of Google on your business simple because they are what Google does. Google is a product of a very specific evolution and your business will be the product of a different evolution.
And when your developers come to you and say that they want to be exactly like Google, you now have an argument to explain why your business can’t be exactly like Google.
Still, there’s nothing preventing you from being the next great company after Google. That prize is still there for the taking.
